Question Over excited

I have one client who has a wonderful Cocker Spaniel X Cavalier named Hula. As this client lives near the beach, she loves to naturally go for a run on the beach and can run KMs at a time thus exercise is not a worry.

The problem she was having with Hula and I didn't have enough time to resolve whilst my client was away is that Hula tends to pull on the leash ONLY when you are on the walkway to the beach and/or on the beach.

Hula also becomes overly excited even a little frantic at the sight of a seagull.

What I was doing was to either re-direct Hula's attention into a "sit + down" behaviour (and only rewarding her when she has done the sit and down) or to keep moving with Hula jumping, making noise (carrying on) until she had calmed down and then gave her verbal and other praise.

I also am encouraging my client to invest in a Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness to help with the training ... is there anything else you can suggest ?
