Hello.
I have a 7 year old (human years) Pekingese female. She is very friendly and also usually gets along with other dogs. She does like to be the alpha dog around my mother's a Shitzo and my brother's dog which is a mut with a lab mix. Even though they play great. Yesterday as a kind of quick decision my girlfriend and I purchased a 3 month yorkie male. We brought him to my mom's house where he met my Pekingese. The Peek didn't seem to have any problem with the puppy there. This morning when we had them together the pup was jumping around and the peek snarled at the puppy (which I believe is normal) but it seems that the Peek is afraid of the puppy. She runs to my lap when the puppy goes near it. She also doesn't seem to want to play with her toys when the puppy is in it's create. Doese anyone know if this is normal or have any ideas to get them better acquainted because if the peek continues to be scared I think we may have to return the yorkie. |

hi joe8314,
it's too bad to see you're having difficulty fitting in your new pup with your lovable pekingese. Maybe it will help to understand the different characteristics of the 2 dogs to be able to appreciate your situation. the pekingese as i know it is an affectionate dog and can be very loyal to her person/people. It also requires minimal exercise compared with other dogs - which is to say that it is not as active or playful as the yorkie. she may not be actually afraid of the yorkie but maybe it is jealousy that she is displaying. This can be expected however, if she's been around you for a quite some time already. Though Pekingese can be an active dog they are not boisterous like other dogs or in this case, maybe not as playful as your new pup which may explain her snarling when she sees the yorkie jumping around. remember that a male yorkie is likewise affectionate and they constantly seek attention and has an exuberant nature. So keeping in mind these differences may be helpful in thinking of ways to get them to live together harmoniously. Hope my two cents will help you somehow. All the best! |
