Default dog urinates on bed

My friend's dog goes into the bedroom of their boarder and urinates on the bed and recently in her handbag! It's a small male (not desexed) chiwauwa cross terrier about 4 years old. (sorry about the spelling !) He also shows aggression to visitors until aquainted but is normally extremely affectionate. They got him from a dog home about a year ago and my guess is he is establishing the pecking order and wants the boarder to know he is above her in the pecking order. He never does this to any other member of the family. Any advice on how to handle this situation?

Thanks
Freya

Obedience and potty training can help here. If the owners agree, it may also be a good idea to have the dog neutered.

if the dog thinks he is above your friend in the pecking order then dinner time is a good time to show the pet that it is not. Have your friend enforce a sit before your friend gives the dog its food. The dog will subconsciously relate that to the alpha leader of the pack giving permission down the hierarchy to dig in

In this situation potty training and obedience training will most likely solve the problem. Invest most of your time to teach your puppy the appropriate and acceptable place to eliminate. Show the puppy that he is lower in rank than you. You take the Alpha position all the time. Letting the puppy recognize that you can control the situation is very important in the success of your endeavor.

Most of us have a tendency to be upset when our dogs urinate on beds. It doesn't means this as the insult that humans get it to be, and the dog doesn’t see it as disgusting. Some canines mark their own beds by urinating there. The first thing to do is prevent a recurrence and have the bed back to usable condition. When a dog has urinated on the bed, the dog should not be allowed there till some time has passed, and if possible the reason for it having occurred has changed. Have the dog sleep in a crate, close the bedroom door, or put a baby gate across the doorway. It could be feasible for this dog to get bed privileges again without having the problem turning out to be chronic, or it may not. The key usually lies in figuring out why it happened.

Potty training is easy enough. You just need to be patient and consistent. On average, it would around 1 to 2 months of constant reminder to get your dog to pee and pop where you want them to. I find that the bigger dogs are easier to train than the smaller ones, but patience and consistency always works.

I totally agree with you! I had the same problem before. My dog urinated on my bed and I was really upset about it. Although I know that they are territorial and such, it can still be very frustrating. From then on, I always close the door of my room and not let the dog in. I also penalized my dog immediately after the action was done to let him know that it was a bad thing. Also, I obedience train my dog to make sure he knows his limits. Since then, he is used to sleeping in his crate and doesn't bother me anymore with accidents like these. I am happy with our relationship and we enjoy each other's company
