Hi ! I have a granddog that's a cockerpoo. He's is a sweet, loving, quiet lap-dog that loves to take walks. The problem that we have is when we walk him (2-4 times per day), he does his business but constantly tries to mark his territory afterwards. Instead of enjoying a nice stroll for 30-40 minutes, he wants to raise his leg every few feet or so every chance he gets, trying to mark his spot. And when he has nothing to give, he then 'butts-up' next to trees straining himself trying to mark. It's also a problem when we go to the dog park. He can't enjoy himself with other dogs because he's constantly trying to cover their scents with his own. I don't have him often, but need to know how to help him? Thanks in advance for any help. |

Yeah, this is very usual with older dogs. But it is still not late to teach him the proper behavior. Try reinforcing your superiority to him so he would respect when you tell him when you say no. If he respects you enough, it won't be too hard to direct him not to do it when you tug his leash when you go outside. Try also to look for some behavior issues underneath. Maybe your dog is experiencing something unusual that makes him stressed out and releases it out when he does his markings outside.
