Default Agresive Males

I have two male dogs. Both are neutered. One is a Chow mix and the other is a Lab/Pitbull mix. They spend a lot of time together and are fine. My wife and I live on a large lot on a lake and they are in heaven. The problems occur when you play fetch or give to much attention to one or the other. We had a fight that was truly frightening. Once they were separated they were ok, but we decided to separate them for the evening. I really don't like the idea of having to apply no touch towards them and my wife and I agree we need to be in control. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

dogs are like human rivalry emerge...I think threat them equal as much as you can...and don't show that there is special among them...
