Unhappy Help!!!

I have a 3 month old female Pom that is adorable! She is very sweet except for when it comes to other dogs. When she is around bigger dogs she constantly jumps at their face. My parents have a Golden Retriever and when I take Chloe over to their house their poor dog can't even lay down because Chloe is in her face and won't leave her alone. She doesn't bark or growl or nip or anything at her, she looks like she's just playing, but other dogs don't really find it fun and I'm afraid that some day a dog isn't going to tolerate it and really hurt her. I've tried teaching her "down" and then giving her a treat which she picked up on quickly, but she won't stay down, 5 seconds later she back jumping in their face. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Jumping is commom especially in small dogs. Jumping up is how they greet each other since they are so small; they want to be at your level or the bigger dogs level. Also, small dogs are usually more hyper. Plus, you pom is still a puppy at only 3 months old so she should have a lot of energy and want to play. Basically it is normal. This happens to my dog too with small dogs since she is so big; They just want to play with her but she would never bite them.

If she is really bugging your parents dogs and you can see their dog is really getting unhappy then you should keep her on a leash to keep her away. If your parents dog is older then he probably doesn't want to play! If your parents dog is not aggressive and has no problems with other dogs then I wouldn't really worry about him biting her.

I don't think there is really any way to stop her from trying to play with your parents dog. All you can do is keep her on a leash or in a seperate area. You could also try giving her toys to play with so she wants to play with them and not the other dog or something to chew on like a raw hide so she is kept occupied for a while. As long as she is not jumping all over you or your parents then this is pretty normal and acceptable behaviour.

If she is a hyper active puppy with lots of energy then try exercising her more, taking her to doggy care and just geneal play to get some of that energy out. Try walking her before you go to your parents house so she will be tired and not want to play.

Just a few suggestions but really this is very normal for a puppy and is not something to be worried about. Good luck

Most adults will give a pup leeway until about 4 mos., then they start teaching them some manners. This is totally normal. When this happens, the worst thing you can do is intervene and scoop her up. Keeping a leash on her is a good idea, you need to have control over her. Practice your down/stay A LOT, not just when she is excited. 5 secs. is a long time for an excited pup to stay down, so she needs to practice. Keep an eye on them, but relax. If you get uptight, they will sense it and you will make the situation worse.

Somwhere between 4 to 6 months your Poms puppy liscense will expire, and she will be disciplined, probably with a snarl and snap. Keep an eye on it, but don't get overly concerned. Once she is spanked by the older dog, her behavior should change. Dogs typically only measure out just the right amount of disicipline necessary for the situation. Rescueing her or otherwise preventing her needed spanking will not help the situation.
