Getting mad doesn't work; it only makes the dog afraid, which makes it want to run away. Chasing the dog doesn't work, because being chased is a game to a dog.

One option is to run in the opposite direction. While being chased is a game, so is the act of chasing. Run away from the road and see if the dog chases you.

My problem was that my dog (a mini Aussie) became leash savvy--she was golden and consistent when on lead, but unpredictable when off lead. I've just started experimenting with a remote collar (e-collar), and am very encouraged. The ability to give a dog a mild correction, when not connected to the dog and from a considerable distance, is very empowering. Hopefully, in time, she will lose her leash savviness (since she will be receiving corrections when off lead), and will then be obedient all the time (even without the remote collar).

My dog obedience instructor agrees, but warns that the e-collar must be used correctly or it can cause problems. I've done a lot of research online, and have found the avoidance training approach to be very effective.

So if you try a remote collar, do your homework first and make sure you know how to go about it.

Steve
