Default Puppy Training

Hello! I have a 4 month Pom named Chloe that I am working on training. She is very smart and catches on quick. We now know sit, lay, and come, so she is doing very well! My problem is that sometimes when I give her a command (epically come), she won't respond right away and I will have to tell her several times before she will. How do I get her to respond right away and not on her own terms, or is this just a puppy thing that she will grow out of? Also I don't think I have quit established myself at the leader of the pack with her...any tips?! Thanks!!

Do you treat her when she does come? It's best to start with a treat when they comply to a new command. Something little, maybe a small cheerio as a reward. Some dogs need to have an insentive to follow commands and at 4 months she's probably more interested in what is going on around her than complying to your command. So make a practice to treat her every time she does comply.

Oh, and practice patience if she isnt' coming right away wait her out and when she does come "It's party time!!!"

As the pup gets a little older, I use a short cord attached to their collar. Give the command, give a gentle tug on the cord and bring the pup to you. Reward, pet and praise and then repeat. If the pup does not respond, give the command, gently reel them in to you and then praise them when they get to you. If the pup does not respond to the second command do not continue to shout at the dog. Move around a little and then give the command again. I also find it sometimes helps to take the pup out of their normal area, have the short training session and then return to their domain.

Once the pup has learned what come on the short cord means I switch to a longer check cord and add the whistle command. Give the come command, blow the whistle and bring the dog to you. Reward, praise and release, in one or two training sessions the dog will be responding to the whistle command alone.

Give her a treat every time she follow your command...And also wait for a time until she perfect those command...Some dog did not get the command that fast...
