I'm a new member, and I haven't really figured out how to do this yet; maybe this will work.
I have a farm with a few cattle and horses, and am a long-time dog person, with training experience. The local humane society has a dog that looks like a likely Queensland Heeler: from the pictures I've seen, he's it. He was turned in without information, but seems to be about two years old, and pretty amiable on short acquaintance: I took him out on a leash, and he readily heeled, seemed very willing. I've never trained a cattle dog to work cattle, and I need to figure out whether, at two, he could - or would - be a likely candidate, whether other traits (say, if he is a "natural retriever") would be indicators, and perhaps whom I could find to do the training and then teach me how to use him. I already have dogs, and although I could use a good help with the cattle, I don't want to bite off more than I can chew: things are pretty peaceful now. I could probably make arrangements to visit him repeatedly at the Humane Society before making a decision: if nothing else, I'd obedience-train him both for his sake and to see how we get along. They say he's not in any immediate danger of euthanasia. Any advice? |

Are you thinking of getting the dog for yourself?
A cattle dog is one of the most intelligent breed so I am sure that you will not have a hard time training him. They are very active dogs and they need a high physical activity so it is important that he gets enough exercise or he may become destructive with all the pent up energy that he has. This type of breed are also easily bored so I suggest that you try to change the dogs activity every often. I think that you might find the dog challenging but you'll have lots of fun training him. Good luck! ![]() |
