Default Frustrated

8 months ago I adopted a 2 year old female beagle named Molly, she had come from 2 previous homes that did not want to keep her. She is a GREAT dog and I loves her to pieces, BUT... despite doing what I know to do she keeps pooping in the house, I live in an upper and walk her 3-4 times a day even though she is a house dog and does not like to go out, she is afraid of everything and everyone although she has warmed up to me very well, she is crate trained and I only put her in the crate when I will be out for more than an hour, she sleeps with me nicely. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get her to stop pooping in the house??? When she does do it she knows she did wrong for she goes right in her crate and tries to hide. Suggestions? Thank You Anyone who can help me!

We have had a similar issue. Our puppy does great if we staya on a schedule. Monday through Friday when we work he is walked 3 times a day, before his morning food, as soon as we get home, and before bed. He generally poops all three times and then does not have accidents in between.

For some reason on the weekends he may have an accident. It is like he doesn't know how to ask to go out. It is getting better as he gets olders.

We had a trainer with a previous puppy who told us to feed him in the crate and then take him out 15 minutes later to potty. If he didn't go he went back in to the crate. If he only did one job, he got supervised play for 15 minutes and then was taken back out, every 15 minutes until he went!

Good luck!

Smile Re: Frustrated

I think the main problem is that she is afraid of everything and everyone outside and this stops her from being relaxed when it comes poop, as this is the moment any creature becomes vulnerable. So she actually does it where she feels safe. I also think that she was't properly trained as you mention she wasn't wanted in her previous homes (poor dog). She needs proper training to undo the damage and teach her not to fear. It's possible. Then I think the problem will solve itself.
All the best

The best way to groom your dog is to consult a professional dog trainer. I know of a very good dog trainer named Better Dogs. They provide many services ranging from dog potty training to dog obedience training and dog training oakland county. You can visit their website for additional details. Kudos!

I think its a good idead to understand why they do some of the things that they do. Some beagle behavior is out of boredom, some out of transitional changes as they grow out of puppy stages into adulthood, and some can occur due a sudden change in their environment.

Hope this gives you some other ideas

The main and probably hardest thing to do is to remain calm and try to be patient.

The next thing is to try and catch the dog in the act and then use a correction (whatever term or sound you have chosen). Immediately after you have corrected the dog, take it outside and let it finish. While it is going outside remember to praise it immediately as well.

Never correct the dog when you do not catch it in the act and never correct the dog while it's in it's crate. You want the crate to remain a safe comfortable place for the dog.

The other issue is that you dog was probably not socialized well as a puppy, therefore it is scared of a lot of different situations. You want to remain calm and be confident when you introduce it to new situations and make sure to use treats and toys to make it a pleasant experience for your dog.

Find out what treat your dog goes crazy for. For some it's liver, for others it's chicken, hot dogs, etc... You will know after you try a few different things. Then you can use this to motivate your dog to try out new situations and become comfortable with them.

Be consistent and remain calm and confident and don't allow your dog to get too excited or too scared and you should see results fairly quickly.

Ryan
