Hi there
Got a mixed-breed German shepherd (one and a half years old) who i think is getting a bit tired of the usual games etc. I want to involve her in something new, that will give her a chance to meet other dogs and people, as well as a bit of exercise and mental stimulation; was thinking about rally-o and flyball, as I've heard these are good. Has anyone tried either of these? Recommendations, thoughts, dislikes, likes, would all be welcomed. Cheers. |

Hi Davidson,
Flyball is like a relay race for teams of dogs, which have to leap various hurdles, then hit a release-button to get a ball (or other toy) and bring it back to the start. It's a lot of fun, and one of the best parts is that mixed breed dogs can participate too - it's not a Serious Sport, it's pretty lighthearted. A lot of owners use it to socialize and relax with other dog owners, as well as spending time with their dog. Rally-O is basically a circuit course for dogs based on obedience. You proceed round a bunch of obedience stations with your dog in close heel, and have to get him to do various obedience "tricks" at each station. You're allowed to encourage your dog and give him treats, pats, etc, but it's less of a sport and more of a mind-game - very mentally demanding, but less so for getting in exercise. It depends what you want really - both have their relative merits. |
