Question How do I stop my dog jumping?

I've got a golden retriever. They are supposed to be a pretty tame breed, but mine doesn't know that!

He jumps up on strangers whenever they enter the house, he's like a Jack Russell! It's really annoying and I have no idea how to stop him doing this.

I wish I knew how to tell him when it's appropriate and when it isn't.

Does anyone have any tips out there?

It should never be appropriate for a dog to jump on a person. He needs to learn this. When you know someone is coming, or when the doorbell rings, put a leash on him. Make him sit before you open the door and tell the person coming in to totally ignore him. He gets no attention until he is sitting quietly. If he jumps up at other times, turn your back and ignore him. Tell him to sit. When he is quiet, he gets attention. Goldens are a fairly intelligent breed and he should catch on quickly as long as you are consistent.

Good luck.

I agree and have other suggestions. Your dog is getting rewarded for this behaviour by allowing him to do it. I also read that this is how dogs like to greet people too because they want to be at eye level with you since they are lower to the ground.

Some other techniques are to put your knee up so when they jump up they get kneed in the chest and bouce off. Do this while saying no. I did this with my dog and she learned very fast. It doesn't hurt them it just makes it unable for the to jump up on you because your leg/knee is in the way. Also, make him sit first if you know he will jump up. Make him sit right away before he has a chance to jump. Then go down to his level so he doesn't feel the need to jump since you are right there.

I aggree with the people coming over that you need to make him sit and stay so he doesn't jump on your guests. Then when he is calm he can come say hello and get attention. Make sure he stays away from the door though in the hallway. He stays untill you tell him it is ok to come. He just needs to learn some proper ediquette Another thing to do is show your guest the knee thing. Tell them if he is going to jump put their knees up so he learns not to jump on them. It is very effective technique and I have seen other people use it.

When dogs jump up on people, they're looking for attention...so to cure them of jumping, you have to make them realize that jumping gets them no attention...The best way is to either train your dog to a reliable sit, or sit and stay, so that when you go to open the door, you say sit and they do...they can't jump and sit at the same time. You also need to tell your guests to not pet the dog while he's jumping on them; that only reinforces his jumping; they should only pet him after he sits. Dogs should learn they don't get something for nothing

If the dog continues to jump, you have to cross your arms over your chest and turn your back - and don't look at the dog at all. This works much better than other methods. Some people believe kneeing a dog in the chest works, but that's still giving attention to them, and while some dogs will stop jumping after a while of this - because it doesn't feel good to them - it's still not the most positive way to train the dog to not jump.

Turn your back on your dog and give it ZERO attention once it starts to jump. Then praise it when its calm. This method usually works pretty well...

Good luck!

There are different reasons why dogs jump. The most common reason is to assert dominance especially if he doesn't see you as the alpha dog. The dog asserts his level manifested through jumping on people. However, dog jumping can also be a sign of excitement. Dogs jump to greet people and this is probably what happens to you. The dog jumps to greet you when you enter the house. Of course you are taller than him, so his tendency is to jump and greet you.

To resolve this problem, you can start by ignoring your dog when he jumps. Don't make a big deal out of your arrival. You can also try greeting the dog on his level. Greet him in a stooped position and show affection so he doesn't need to jump anymore just to greet you. It'll also be better to avoid rough games and activities that will involve dog jumping because it can make your dog feel that jumping is an acceptable behavior. You can also use the sit and off commands. These are very helpful commands that will definitely prevent your dog from jumping. I hope this helps. Cheers!
