Default foods that dogs shouldn't eat

Apart from chocolate, what foods are toxic to dogs? And why? And can dogs eat fruit and vegetables, and if so, cooked or raw? (not as a whole diet, obviously, as a supplement or treats or whatever)

Grapes/raisins, onions, macadamia nuts, artificial sweetner & pips from fruit should be avoided. Some reports say that garlic is not good, but should be OK in small amounts. Dogs can eat most vegetables, green beans, broccoli (not in huge quantities), carrots are all good.

My mother in laws dog likes to eat apples and my dog likes broccolli!

I think fruits and vegtables would be a good alternative to dog biscuts/treats since they are full of vitamins and are so healthy for you. Plus, they are natural unlike dog treats so they don't have preservatives or whatever else they put in them.

We cook fresh food for our dog every meal since he was a pup he's 4 now and weights in at 115 give or take a pound. He hated canned food, the only kind he ever ate without a problem out of a can was venison prescribed by the vet.

He is a chicken, turkey dog. He loves Broccoli, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, zuchinni without seeds, cheese, lamb once in a while, he'll eat beef but mostly leaves it. if you have ice cream he will follow you anywhere. he will eat watermelon. He really likes atlantic salmon.

I've heard you should not give them pizza crust, grapes, shell fish.

I think feeding your dog salmon is a little excessive!...Spoiled!

You can look up what kind of things a dog shouldn't have on the interenet. I know they should never have chocolate because it is a poison to them. Also, dairy is not good for your dog in excessive quantities. If your dog has a tummy ache or upset stomache then it is ok to give them a little yogurt or milk but not on a regular basis; it should almost be used as a medicine or petobismal type thing.

I don't think you need to go as far as switching your dogs diet to people food and making it three meals a day; that's a little too much! But definately introducing different types of fruits and veggies as treats once and a while would be good for the vitamins and nutrients. If you want more information you can cunsult your vet and see what their opinions/suggestions are.

I have home cooked for my dogs for a long time now. They can eat most everything we eat. Onions, Macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, seeds from fruit or stones from fruit should be not allowed.

Brandi eats green beans, parsley, brocolli, carrots, cauliflower, zucchini squash, all vegetalbes I like to eat including spinach. Fruit, except grapes and raisins, are good as long as the stones, seeds are removed.

I don't feed pork (ham) or beef. She usually gets chicken or turkey for her meat source and eggs for vitamin A as well as oatmeal as a grain.

This week her recipe is green beans, carrots, parsley, eggs, chicken, chicken liver, apples, oatmeal and a good supplement. Her weight is perfect and her coat is like silk.

We have blood tests every six months to ensure that she is getting everything she needs.

As far as dogs eating Salmon being spoiled, my female German Shepherd has been eating Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance dog food Fish and Sweet Potato (Salmon) formula for years and loves it. I eat a lot of Salmon myself and always give her a few leftovers which she loves. High in protein, low in fat, good for their heart (Omega 3) and skin (fish oil) and she loves it! Far better than chopped up chicken inerds in most dog food.

Post Re: foods that dogs shouldn't eat

I hear this often but does anyone know WHY a dog cannot eat cooked pork? I fed my dog some leftover pork chops and she didn't get sick or die. Just wondering if it's an "old wives tale" or maybe they can't eat RAW pork because of the possibility of worms. Used to live on a farm and our Beagles ate everything and were extremely healthy. Once had a dog eat a big chocolate ball (a Nieman-Marcus wrapped Christmas gift under the tree) and she never got sick. I was sick about it though!
