That was kind of enlightening, RetrieverGirl41. Thank you very much for the info. It did hit me that these kind of food may pose as allergens to some dogs.

Are mushrooms and broccoli bad for dogs?

I don't think vegetables are bad for dogs. I feed my dog mushrooms and broccoli and they've never been sick.

I think cantaloupes are fine.

I called my vet bc my dog just ate some raisins. He loves them, so I called to find out if he should be allowed to eat them. Then I went online to find more foods. Here's a link that I found. Hope it helps.

That's great DogGirl!

My grandfather also told me before that I should be careful about feeding chickens to my dog. Chicken bones may cause intestinal injury according to him.

For dogs, they are very hard to digest, which means that they don't absorb the nutrients in the food....they are empty calories....Sooo....Your dog could be getting really fat and still not be getting anywhere near the amount of nutrients he needs. Many dogs also have subtle allergies to grains, especially wheat. This can lead to ear infections/scratching etc....

All dog foods are required to list the nutrient content of their food on the label. But just because it is listed, does not mean that it is usable to your dog. If you really want your dog to be in good health, switch to a high quality brand like Blue Buffalo or Orijen, or start feeding him a homecooked or raw diet. The usual brands like purina and science diet and pedigree etc are a guarantee for bad health problems down the road.
I currently am feeding all of my dogs Beneful(Purina) but anytime we have switched foods, one of my dogs gets sick. She can't seem to digest any other food than this particular brand/recipe. Any suggestions on what I can do to transition her? My other two dogs can eat any other type of food and be fine.

i know now...i conduct research...
you're right vegetables are not bad for dogs...
but broccoli is conditional...
it is not bad for your dog if you feed your dog small amount of it...
but if it exceeds 10% it can cause gastrointestinal upsets and if it exceeds 25% it is fatal...

Lightbulb Re: foods that dogs shouldn't eat

I just read the dog food doctrine( http://www.dogfooddoctrine.com ) and it says that almost any fresh, unprocessed food is ok for your dog to eat. Onions and grapes and avocado seeds are the exclusions I think.

The real problem is most commercial dog foods.

The book says that people and their pets are the ONLY creatures on this planet that regularly get degenerative diseases like cancer and this is mostly because we eat the same type of high carb, cooked, fast food like diet.

Feeding your dog almost any type of fresh "living" food will greatly improve their health according to the book. I am certainly no expert but it does seem to make sense.

Thank you for all the advice, I never knew that they shouldn't have grapes or raisins. I will make sure to tell my kids as soon as they get home from school! Our chihuahua loves apples, cheese, chicken, beef and pork (is pork not good for them too?).
