Question Flyball

Anyone doing flyball with their dog?
I got off to a good start with my dog. He successfully completed a beginners course, and even took part in a beginners' competition where the team came third.
But now, it's as though he's losing his confidence. He's started running out of the jumps on the way back. Also, he can only go first in the team, otherwise he goes after the ball from the dog running out.
Some of the dogs get aggressively wound up before their runs and can't be trusted to mix with other dogs. We don't approve of that, but understand that flyball can make dogs incredibly excited.
Anyone with similar experiences, or any advice to offer?
