Exclamation Biting Dog

I have a 5 month old austrailian shepherd mix. He is a very smart puppy, but has recently turned slightly aggressive. I dont think he means it in a mean way, just a way of playing for him. We have had him since he was 7 wks old, and he has been a quick learner for everything we teach him. I am looking for some advice on how we can correct this problem before he gets out of control. Thanks

Wink Re: Biting Dog

There a quite a few cool free articles on this website about how to train your dog not to bite. Here's a link: http://dogobedienceadvice.com/dog_tr...top_biting.php

I've got a couple of beagles and have found the articles in this site quite helpful for dealing with a few niggling issues we had. Ours was mainly digging and whining problems, but they seem to have gone away.

Also that sitstay site is pretty good, there is a review here: http://www.dogobedienceadvice.com/si...tch-review.php

Regards,
Brian

Thumbs up Re: Biting Dog

Thanks Bryan. Yes, i got some good ideas yesterday and have started using them. One of the ones i have been using is the idea of having him drop the toy in front of me, then sitting while i pick it up, and then i can throw it and no bites. So far he is catching onto that quite well.

Um ... biting in dogs isn't really playful behavior. It's dominant behavior.
What do you mean by 'biting'? Is he actually BITING you, or just mouthing/playful nipping?
i ask because they're very different, and playful nipping is pretty easy to cure but a puppy that's showing signs of aggression already is NOT a good sign as far as I'm aware.

No, its not aggression. Maybe a little bit of dominance, since he is 5 mos old now. But, i dont think he means it as being mean. Its usually when he is in the middle of playing w/us that it happens.

If your dog bites when playing then he hasn't learned the proper rules of playing. You need to teach him that biting is not acceptable playing behaviour and that people are not toys. Always play with a toy when playing so they learn this. If he bites you let him know that hurt and it was very bad by saying loudly no or ouch. He needs to learn the propper playing ettequite
