Default New puppy, biting

Hi, I'm new to this forum. We just got a 4 mo. old shepherd/lab mix puppy from a pet adoption. It's been 1 week and I'm about at witts end with this pup. He is usually okay, but when he plays he gets too hyper and starts biting. I have tried yelling ouch! and it doesn't seem to have any real affect on him. I've been told to bop him on the nose, but that just feeds his aggression. Now I've started putting him in his crate when he gets out of hand. I can't have a dog that bites. This dog is for my son and he has broken my son's skin with his biting. The biggest problem is that my son is already shy towards dogs because of a dog getting his leg when he was a toddler. If I can't find a solution to this problem, I'll have to get rid of the dog. Someone please help me out there. I would prefer a method that doesn't include me touching the dog in anyway....maybe when I say ouch I don't follow it up right? I know you're supposed to walk away, but it's hard to walk away when the dog jumps up and bites your backside...please help!

Default Re: New puppy, biting

Heres a suggestion:

With a puppy this young I always leave a light 6 foot leash on. This way if they get too excited and are acting inappropriate I can take the leash and get the dog to sit or lie down till they are calm. This means toys are pushed out of reach and play time is over. Don't leave the dog as especially with a sheperd they will try to herd you. Just game over and have them sit, or down till they have settled down. you will have to do this frequently at first and may have to wait 10 mins for the puppy to calm down. But eventually the pup will calm down faster and you will have to break play time up less often. Once the puppy has calmed start play time again.
