Default Won't stop barking

I have a two year old jack russell. When he wants attention he barks and his shrill bark could wake the dead. Any ideas how to get him to stop. I have tried ignoring him, treats when he stops leaving the room.

Any other suggestions. He drives everyone else in my house nuts

How much excercise does he get? You would suprised how many behavior problems can be solved with the proper amount of excercise. A well behaved dog is a tired dog.

Dogs usually bark because they are trying to tell you something. However, it gets really irritating if they won't stop barking.

I used to have the same problem before and it really made my neighbors angry. It came to a point where I can't handle the barking anymore that I wanted to send "Boogie" (my dog) to an animal shelter because I can't live with him anymore.

A friend helped me curbed Boogie's behavior. However, it really took lots of patience and a great amount of effort before we were able to correct his chronic barking.

I usually leave the house at around 8AM and Boogie is left there by himself. My friend said that dogs who get bored usually bark all the time. That's why I asked my brother (who lives near my house) to visit Boogie during the day and walk him to make sure he gets enough exercise.

I also take Boogie to the park on weekends to make sure he gets enough exercise.

My friend advised me that I should correct Boogie's attitude right away. What I did was to grab his muzzle and say "QUIET!" everytime he barks.

I made it clear to Boogie that he should follow me and that I am 'the master'. When he stops barking, I scratch his tummy. Sometimes, I give him treats if he stops barking.

It took more than a month before he was able to master the QUIET command but I'm so happy that I was able to do something about his chronic barking.

I'm sure that you'll also be able to stop your dog from barking.

I agree with uberglamorous. Dogs bark when they are trying to communicate something. It is important that you understand why your dog is barking.

Our dog had the same problem too and we were all getting pissed at him barking every night. We then found out that our neighbors cat would "visit" us every night.

The question raised by bigtom59 has importance too. Dogs that are confined for long periods of time without supervision gets bored and will bark as a hobby or to entertain himself. Walk your dog or play with him and make sure he gets enough exercise.

Red face Re: Won't stop barking

I saw this video on youtube about using heart beat lullabies to stop dogs barking. It settles them down.

The link is: YouTube - Canine Lullabies:50 Dogs Stop Barking in Less Than 2 Minutes

I also heard you can put a ticking clock with them.

Hope this helps.

Exercising the dog regularly will calm your dog down when indoors. Thus, the dog won't bark as much.

Also, if you are able to take the dog to an agility class, then the dog is able to run around getting any nervous energy out decreasing the barking tremendously.

Hope this helps!
