Default Loud mouth hound

Now this I did say was one of the main problems my dog is having. I do know that she may have gotten this from her mom who is a country dog that just runs out in the timber and hunts all day (I do not know about the male dog). The barking mainly is just at random on and off but when it does start I will smack her a good one on the muzzle with something like a newspaper (this worked for my grandfather) and she just goes on and on until she gets what she wants or and take her down a notch. Please help!!!

Hi iowaboy,

There are lots of different reasons why your dog might be barking all the time. He might just be restless or frustrated about something. Before sanctioning any kind of training or punishment for your dog, it is best to first find out why keeps barking in the first place. Observe his current situation (does he not get enough physical activity to consummate his energies) or his immediate surroundings (is there something bothering him) every time he barks incessantly. If you can't figure this out on your own, consider hiring a vet behaviorist. Hope that helps.

Iowaboy, If your dog has developed a habit of barking, place some pennies in a can and tape it shut. When he barks, shake the can near him and say "quiet" in a firm voice. The purpose of shaking the can is to startle him. If the barking resumes, shake the can again and say

"quiet." Keep the can away from him so he does not consider it a toy. As your dog catches on, your verbal command "quiet" should stop the barking.

If the can does not work, use a squirt bottle to squirt your dog's legs and back accompanied by a firm "quiet" command.

Please remember — any action to deter your dog from barking must be made while he is barking. After-the-fact corrective action only confuses him. Use a strong, firm voice. Avoid yelling, which can be stressful to a dog.

I like big tom idea...
If I have a dog like iowaboy...
I probably try this CAN idea or squirt bottle....
But fortunately my dog is a silent type...
He barks very rare...
Usually I heard him barking when he is playing...

Very good post Camsy. Iowaboy, punishing your pet dog without knowing first the reason why they bark is just like smacking a baby before checking it first. There are lots of reasons why dogs are barking and how you can stop them without using the "iron fist" , check How to Stop a Dog Barking.
