Question Puppy Barking

Hello! I have a 4 month old Pom named Chloe who is a wonderful dog and doesn't bark much at all. I was actually quit surprised when I got her because all I heard before was how loud little dogs are! My problem is that when she does start barking I can't get her to stop, and it's the worst when we're out in the yard or walking around. Isn't there some way I can get her to stop barking when it's time? Thanks!

Try using a shaker or a squirt bottle. I had a problem with my dog too like that when she was younger. She was usually very quiet but once she started I couldn't stop her! I used a shaker which is just a plastic water bottle with some small rocks inside. When she starts barking shake it really hard. The noise distracts them and they don't like the noise. My dog learned really fast not to do it and when I tell her no she stops. I also taught her "quiet". If she wines or barks I say "no, quiet" or "quiet" and she stops; it's basically another command you can teach them. If your dog is barking while playing it is normal though and you can't really stop them; that's just how they play My dog barks and growls while playing. That's the time she is the most vocal. It's natural. I have also heard of using a water bottle to squirt them with. When they start barking squirt them while saying no or stop. They learn pretty fast. Rmember though once she stopd to reward her through lots of praise, good girl, and treats. Possitive re-enforcement is the best Good luck!

Most dogs instantly stop barking because they can't sniff and lick the treat while barking. During this quiet time praise her continuously - - "Good girl, stop barking, what a good quiet dog you are, good dog . . ." After 3 seconds of no barking, let her have the treat. The next time she barks, require her to stop barking for 5 seconds before she gets the treat. Each time she is told to stop barking and succeeds, she will be rewarded.

If she barks even one little wooflet after you've given the command, scold her immediately. Timing is everything. As training proceeds, the required period of silence is increased gradually; at first "Stop Barking" means: No barking for the next 3 seconds, then 5 seconds, then 10 seconds and so on. Within a single training session, you can teach your dog to stop barking for up to 1 or 2 minutes. This is major progress, because whatever set off her barking in the first place is history, and she is likely to be quiet until the next disturbance.

Hi pmvolosky'
Hey, I have to say that kuritsa18 hit right on the head, I had the same problem and the good old water bottle worked great for me! And yes make sure when they stop to let them know they did good with a small treat.
