I have a 2 year old Golden retrievier called Treacle which I love to pieces.
Being elderly I am in constant fear of burglary or robbery. I wondered if anyone had any ideas on how to train my dog to bite strangers and generally defend my property? Tom |

In most cases, a Golden Retriever is not the best breed for a guard dog. I've had 3 Goldens. The first two from the time they were babies. All would bark if someone came to the door, but quite often would greet the visitor with a toy in their mouth. Sometimes just having a dog that barks and sounds big inside the house will deter burglars. I would not recommend trying to make the dog aggressive as you may not be able to control who the aggression would be directed at. Goldens are bred for family companion dogs and hunting dogs. In time your dog will have a certain attachment to you that will probably make it want to protect you should the need arise. I'd install an alarm on your home and enjoy your sweet Golden's company.
