Default rotties

I love rottweilers, have never had one of my own but have known several people with the dogs and I think they are just so beautiful and smart ...
I'm thinking about getting a puppy, but am just wondering if anyone can enlighten me on whether they tend to chew stuff or are generally more destructive than other breeds, especially when puppies. Obviously I'd train him and stuff and give him lots of chew toys and things like that, but i'd just like some information ahead of time to give me some expectation - I live with a couple of flatmates in a big house with a garden and stuff, and they're all OK with me getting a dog, but I don't think they'd be overly pleased to find everythign in the house gnawed.
Anyone have any ideas about this? Do they chew more than other dogs as a general rule?

Default Re: rotties

I own a rottweiler mastiff cross. Yes, these dogs are highly intelligent. I know my own dog is very smart and learns very quickly; pretty easy to train and house break; all you have to do is be consistant and start training from day one.

Habits they have are chewing. They are fairly high energy dogs and love to play. so, lots of exercise is needed and attention also because they are so smart and they need lots of mental stimulation. I know when mine gets bored or lonely that's when the chewing becomes a problem. also, digging can be a problem but i think you can do some training with them to stop it. I can't leave mine alone outside by herself for more than ten minutes without her digging.

Rottweilers definately need to be stricktly trained and shown that you are the boss because they are naturally aggressive and grow to big a big and powerful dogs. so, taking your puppy to obeduience classes if you are not sure how to yourself is recommended.

Other than that you can look stuff up on the internet about the breed to see if it is right for you. They are very nice and loving dogs and make great additions to the familly!!
