Default Australian Cattle Dog

Hi,
My husband and I are wanting to get an Australian Cattle Dog next year and would like to find out lots of information. We have had dogs all of our life and raised Miniature Schnauzers for several years. We have also had a Black Lab, Brittany Spaniel, coon dogs and mixed breeds.
The information that we are reading about is kinda scary; that you should have at least a 6 feet fence, they aren't very good with children, cats and other animals etc.etc.
Has anyone had the experience with the Australian Cattle Dog? What are the pro's and con's? Information will surely be appreciated. Thank You!

Kelly

Default Re: Australian Cattle Dog

hi,
i am a first time dog owner and have got two red cattle dogs. i find them wonderful, they are intelligent and so easy to train. i have them on my farm where i breed horses. they are with me all day most days so there is really not much trouble they can get into. they naturally let me know when things are not ok - several short barks indicated there is something on the property that does not belong. they have learnt where the boundaries of the property are and dont go beyond it - they are not fenced in or tied up. i dont take them on trail rides as yet as it is still part of their training to stay within the boundaries however i do have friends that take their cattle dogs everywhere including 40km rides - they just love to go and go and go.
hope this helps and would love to hear how you go.
